Mutsuko Miki, wife of late Prime Minister Takeo Miki, dies

TOKYO, Japan - File photo taken in September 2002 shows Mutsuko Miki, the wife of former Prime Minister Takeo Miki and a renowned activist. Mutsuko Miki died of colon cancer at a Tokyo hospital on July 31, 2012. She was 95.

Takeo Miki

Born on March 17, 1907 in Tokushima Prefecture. Miki was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1937 at age 30. He belonged to several conservative parties before joining the Liberal Democratic Party. Miki became Japan's 66th prime minister on Dec. 9, 1974 after the resignation of Kakuei Tanaka over a bribery scandal. He resigned in December 24, 1976 following LDP setbacks in the general election. Disappointment and Expectation

Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka resigns, causing land prices to soar and inflation to rise. Takeo Miki became Prime Minister. The village of Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture was designated as a development zone in Prime Minister Tanaka's plan to remodel the Japanese archipelago.
